dog care??

is it expensive to have a dog like a beagle? i ask my mom to get a dog but she says its expensive i dont know if thats rue so is it?…

Any dog is expensive. Unlike people, the insurance you can get for pets is CRAP.

You have to worry about the initial visit, shots, and tests. Then there is the spay/neuter. Then you have the monthly maintainence of food, flea medicine, heart worm medicine, and wormer. Don't forget the toys, dog house/kennel, as well as other accessories.

Then you have your time that you invest in training (which also costs money), and taking the dog for walks, etc.

On average, for my 2 dogs and 1 cat I spend about $250 every other month on food, medication, and toys. then there are the vet bills, which my last one was $600 for a skin infection on a dog that I adopted who came to me infested with fleas and sick.

Your mom is right, they are expensive. People don't realize this when they are looking at the short term.

For Pppl with Dogs: How Do You Take Care and Train A Dog?

How do you take care/train a dog? Here are other questions for caring a dog. I'm talking about a Golden Retriever:
How often a day/week you take it on a walk and how much time and distance?
When do you start training a puppy to go on walks/get it potty trained?
How often do you give it a bath, how long, &how much soap to use?
Would you give a puppy a different bath than a regular dog?
How much do you feed it a meal&how many meals a day?
How much would you feed a puppy&do they eat regular dog food?
What kind of dog food do you feed a dog?
Should you give your dog a doghouse to sleep in or a dog bed you can get a pet store?
How much toys should you get for a dog?
How much does a dog tag cost?
When should you start training your puppy&was are the basics?
How often do you take a dog to a vet? Are there any good reliable vets in southern California in Fountain Valley or near by?
How do you cure them of diseases like worms?
Is there anything else I should know about caring a dog?

so basically, you know nothing about dogs. don't worry it's not unheard of… but really something you should have researched before you got the dog….
ok everything in order as asked will be answered…

you should walk your dog whenever it needs to go do natures buisness and if you feel it needs some exercise (i'd say 2 times a day for exercise)
there's no need to train it to go on walks. grab a leash and go. however, teaching him basic obediance commands(sit, stay, no, etc.) will improve his behavior.
potty training is something that will take awhile, up to a year or two, depending on the dog. just remember to take him out WHEN HE"S Gotta go. you don't want your dog to get in the habit of going inside.
bath your dog about every 2 weeks, i'd say use dog shampoo once…rinse…repeat. Talk to a vet for what kind of shampoo. and sometimes it will even give you tips on how often to use it on the bottle, as well as how much (best way to think of how much is to thing about how big the dog is.)
for smaller puppies, i'd say to give them a bath in the kitchen sink (so they won't drown). but if the puppy is pretty big(about 6-12 months old depending on the breed) you can go with a bath outside or in the bathtub.
you should feed every dog about 3 times a day. talk to a vet about which brand, or experiment with you own brand to figure out what your dog likes. I'd go with dry food rather than can food, because canned food can sometimes be more fattening and cost alot more. also it makes you dog have to "do their business" more often. serving sizes are usually stated on the bags for dog food as well as canned food.

dog houses and dog beds are all up to where you want to keep your dog. if you want him to sleep outside, get a doghouse. but i'd go with a dog bed, especially for puppies.

i'd get them about 2 toys a month, if their being good. that way they don't go through to many, and they'll always be in a playful mood.

dog tag prices vary by what kind. just a regular name tag is pretty cheap. and shot tags you'll get from te vet. nollars usually go anywhere from $5-20, depending on the durability. a good collar can last up to about 2 years, sometimes even longer.

you should start training from the very beginning. The basics are potty trainning, sitting, staying, speaking, and any other commands you can think of. If you've decided on a name, stick with that name and use it frequently so the dog learns it and will understand when you call him.

vets are something that you can find in almost every city/town. check the yellow pages or mapquest the nearest vet. be sure to ask any and all questions you have while you are there. you usually need to take your dog in for annual checkups (if you're all about that). just remember that vet bills can be pricey, so only go for major emergencies.(illness, hurt, or accidents)

Vets also can give you medicines and tips on caring for illnesses.

just remember that your dog is like a little person with fur, as most pets are. And they have good memories so remember to treat it right as a pup and you'll have a best friend for life.

How much dog food do you feed a jack russell and rat terrier?

I have 2 dogs, a jack russell and a rat terrier. We used to always make sure there was food in there bowels at all times. But then the jack russell started to gain a ton of weight. Now we follow the back of the dog food bag guideline. It is premium dog food. My dogs get normal activity, but now they act like they're starving, is this normal? My dogs are healthy otherwise.

it is normal because they were used to eating as much as they wanted because you would just leave the food dish full. they are adjusting to the restrictions. this is very normal and you dont have to worry about a thing

How can I fix my dogs unusual behavior?

My dog is a minituare Schnauzer, but he's really big for a minituare. Well my dogs problem is that he always barks and growls at other dogs, even ones that are twice his size. He can't confront other dogs because there either scared of him, or they get pissed off at my dog. There are only a few dogs my dog confront calmly. I think my dog only growls because he's excited, because once he meets the dog he's very gentle and just sniffs around. How do I fix my dogs problem, I know one way to fix it is to get another dog for him to play with. But my family does not want another dog.
It's hard to introduce him to dogs because people just walk away at my barking dog lol.

i have a m. schnauzer myself, and he is like that too. its a natural thing in their breed. especially if your dog is not used to being around other dogs, like mine. i dont think you CAN actually fix it, maybe just train him. schnauzers really are aggressive towards other dogs anyway, so its up to you whether you want your dog to change or just be ''natural''. i'm fine with my dog just like that. i pretend he's protecting me . :)

How do Cats and Dogs know which is cat food and which is dog food?

I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. They're more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients - chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasn't cat food?

I also know of dogs that won't eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they're pigs and will eat anything).

It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is who's? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too - like salmon. You can't say it's the ingredient. How come they know the difference?

They know, especially dogs. If you leave the cat food bowl on the floor the dog will go after it before it goes for the dog food. Cat food is higher quality ingredients than dog food, and dogs know this because after they try cat food they think it tastes better. Cats usually won't eat the dog food if it is on the floor because of the same reasons. They know the cat food tastes better as well. Here is a solution to keep the dog from eating the cat's food. Put the cat food bowl up on the counter top where the dog can't reach it. Only the cat can jump up there, and the cat won't go near the dogs food bowl on the floor.

Anyone have information on how much is appropriate to charge someone for house-sitting/dog care?

I live in the San Francisco Bay area (Palo Alto area). One of my clients has asked if I would like to take care of her beautiful home and her dog for 2 &1/2 days. Involves light gardening, walking dog 3X per day and staying overnight. How much is appropriate to charge?

I had my own pet sitting business in the So. Cal area for years, and the going rate here for overnights ranges between $65-$75 per night for one pet. You should check the rates of other sitters in that area to see what they are charging and charge similarly.

Which is the best dog care and training book I can get?

I'm not in favor of a single book. The simple reason is because no one person knows it all. Use your local library, there isn't any reason that you need to buy all of them that are available. But, it is in your best interest to even read the ones that you disagree with, because contempt prior to investigation only leads to everlasting ignorance.

If you are into videos and are looking for a good one to get a pup started, I like "Sound Beginnings" by Jackie Mertens. But, understand that it is geared to starting a retriever field trial dog.

Ybs also has a video by Connie Cleveland that is absolutely top drawer for the obedience competitor.

DOG TRAINING-BARKING PROBLEMS

Dogs bark to express themselves to other dogs, to other people, or to express their deep sense of emotion when they are by themselves. Many owners are able to keep their dog quiet when they are around but when absent the dog will bark forever. Certain breeds, especially those bred as guard dogs are known to be heavy barkers. Also small breed dogs seem to bark more than other sizes.

Dogs that start barking and continue to bark about 20 minutes after you leave could be an indication of separation anxiety. If this is the case it will require some extra attention and training. It is important to rule out why your dog is barking. If they start to bark towards the end of the day, there could be a number of reasons. They could be hungry, need exercise, or need a bathroom break.
Barking can be caused by either an external or internal stimulus. An “attention getting” bark arises from an internal distress (hunger, exercise, bathroom etc.). A bark meant to sound an alert arises from a passing person, dog, or other reason.
If the dog barks because of internal stimulus, it can be trained to stop. You may ignore the dog until it settles down then reward it. You may also hold the dogs snout firmly and say in a gentle voice “Shhh”. When the dog settles down always reward him. External stimulus is harder to deal with as the dog is only warning you of a presence that should not be there.

There are a number of ways to curb your dog from barking:
               Ignore, wait, and reward method.
               The squirt gun method
               The collar and leash method.
               The physical correction method
